In a recent issue of Bus & Coach Buyer magazine Rob Orchard reported from Northumberland on recent developments where all the various agencies and providers of CT came together to try and determine a framework for establishing sustainability for community transport operation across the county.

Over 90 delegates signed up for the 2008 Northumberland Community Transport Conference. It was held exactly one year on from the very well attended Creating Sustainable Community Transport event, at the same excellent venue - Choppington Social Welfare Centre.

It is proposed that a voluntary car scheme should be established, provisionally called Getabout Northumberland. The initial work has been undertaken by a Steering Group that includes Age Concern Northumberland, Help The Aged, Transport in North Northumberland, Wansbeck Council of Voluntary Service, and WRVS. The project is just one of number of initiatives being undertaken by the Rural & Community Transport Development Project team.

This Seminar will describe the function and operation of the proposed scheme, and hear about good practice from elsewhere. There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions, talk to the Steering Group Members, and make your contribution to the development of this exciting new transport service that will be of particular interest to people living and working in the more rural parts of the county.

Rural and community transport (CT) in Northumberland is improving. Since the start of 2007 there have been many changes: training, sharing best practice, delivering new services, and improving the viability of operations.
Further developments are planned to consolidate these improvements and broaden what is on offer. People have many different transport needs, and there is significant potential for new transport services to open up new travel opportunities. Northumberland residents should not be excluded from society as a result of living in isolated rural areas, no bus service being available, no access to a car, or an inability to board and ride a bus safely.

The conference proceedings for 'Creating Sustainable Transport in Northumberland' which took place on Wednesday 31st January 2007, are now available to download. Over 95 people attended, delegates participated fully in the workshops and the information gathered will be used to plan future development of Community Transport in Northumberland. The draft plan for the next stage will be available from this website in March 2007.
