Project Manager for the Preparing for Personalised Travel Planning project of Ashton, Leigh & Wigan Primary Care Trust, creating and organising a range of active travel promotional and practical resources. These include a journey planning website, an active travel leaflets ordering and distribution service, a How To Get Here template for local businesses and organisations to use with their own websites or leaflets, and training for health trainers, health improvement workers and other professionals working to persuade people to put active travel in their daily routines.

A 3 month temporary position as part of a year spent travelling in Australia. I provided advice on travel plans and questionnaire design to the transport planning team.
Achievements
Organised a travel plan launch event for Arup’s Sydney office; designed an on-line staff travel survey for major banking client; designed and analysed a bus user survey and pedestrian counts for the local rail operator.

Over 7 years’ experience at a consultancy that specialises in research to understand the impact of sustainable transport policies and measures on travel behaviour. I successfully progressed from Consultant level to Senior (in 2003) and then Principal Consultant (2005) and Office Manager (2007) since joining as a graduate in 1999. I was responsible for managing a team of 10 staff in the Lichfield office. This involved staff deployment, ensuring high productivity and managing the office budget.
Achievements
Advised B&Q on techniques to reduce staff car travel through development of innovative travel plans. I successfully prepared 8 detailed travel plans for B&Q stores which led to B&Q requesting that I write a travel plan for its head office in Hampshire. www.diy.com/travelplans
Project Manager of a large scale postal survey to monitor trips made by concessionary pass holders for Devon County Council. I ensured the project was delivered to time and budget and to the satisfaction of the client who then renewed the contract on two occasions, in 2006 and 2007. www.devon.gov.uk/devonwide
Led the qualitative and quantitative research for a Department for Transport-funded trial of an accessible coach service. I designed and analysed a passenger survey, interviewed disabled users and coach drivers to obtain user impacts of the coach’s wheelchair lift. Designed an innovative “mystery traveller” survey to assess the quality of public transport provided in the North West from the perspective of international visitors. Also consulted extensively with local stakeholders to identify ways to improve public transport information provision at Manchester and Liverpool airports.

Expert knowledge of sustainable transport
Ian has considerable knowledge of sustainable transport issues and policies, travel plans, social exclusion and accessibility issues. His work in these areas has involved consultation with users and stakeholders to evaluate innovative sustainable transport measures, in terms of travel behaviour and user and stakeholder acceptance.
Project management skills
During his 8 years’ experience as a transport consultant at Transport & Travel Research Ltd (TTR), Ian developed expertise as a project manager for public sector clients such as the DfT, the European Commission and UK Local Authorities. His project management skills include client liaison, designing budgets, ensuring projects come in on time and on budget, and delegating effectively to meet client expectations and deadlines.
Scheme appraisal and evaluation
Ian has expertise in the design, implementation and analysis of evaluation frameworks for public and private sector clients. For example, collecting indicators to monitor project impacts, designing and analysing questionnaires, moderating focus groups and undertaking stakeholder interviews. He has developed excellent analysis and report-writing skills to present complex results in a clear and concise way.
Public Transport Planning
Ian has skills in network analysis and public transport site audits including analysis of accessibility for disabled people. He has lead local studies to identify ways in which people can use public transport to access employment opportunities in deprived communities and contributed to the design of two community transport schemes in the West Midlands.
Communications skills
Through managing research projects for public sector clients, Ian has developed excellent communication skills, and is familiar with work conducted in multi-agency settings, working particularly closely with stakeholders from the transport, regeneration and local community sectors. In work on European projects, Ian successfully overcame language barriers by using simplified language and by developing a glossary of technical terms to ensure partners understood the requirements of the particular project.
